CELI and CILS exams (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language) are the official examinations of proficiency in Italian as a foreign language. The CELI and CILS certification is divided into six levels (from A1 to C2) based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by the Council of Europe and recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is given at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (University for Foreigners in Perugia) as well as at the Università per Stranieri di Siena (University for Foreigners in Siena). Each level measures the student’s ability to communicate in a variety of situations and contexts. The CELI certification is for students of Italian wishing simply to measure their proficiency, persons needing to prove competency in Italian for employment opportunities, or for foreign students wishing to enroll in an Italian university.
